DDR5 is the fifth-generation double data rate (DDR) memory standard for use in PCs and Laptops. In upcoming years, you will be able to see widespread support for DDR5 RAM for most modern-day CPUs and motherboards. DDR5 RAM is the successor of DDR4 RAM and specifications-wise, DDR5 memory is way superior to DDR4 memory in all aspects whether it is speed, module capacity, power consumption, and bandwidth. DDR5 operates at a lower voltage compared to DDR4 and comes with onboard power management integrated circuit (PMIC) whereas the power management of DDR4 RAM is handled by the motherboard.
Another major addition to DDR5 RAM is that it comes with On-die ECC for correcting errors. The On-die ECC (ODECC) or Error Correction Code is DDR5 module specific only and provides ECC in the RAM chip or IC only and not throughout the whole channel or during the transport of data from RAM to the CPU. So, technically it is not the real ECC but rather a slim-down version. Although both DDR5 and DDR4 come with 288 pins, they are electrically incompatible with each other, and also the module key notch is also different. It means you cannot use DDR5 RAM on a motherboard with DDR4 slots or vice versa even if the motherboard chipset includes support for both DDR4 and DDR5 RAM. Moreover, RAM modules are not backward compatible, you cannot use a DDR5 RAM module on a DDR4 motherboard or vice versa.
|DDR4 RAM||DDR5 RAM|
|Speed||3200 MT/s (Max.)||4800 – 8400 MT/s|
|Max. Module Capacity||32GB||Up to 512GB and up to 128GB (for mainstream PCs)|
|PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit)||Separate (controlled by motherboard)||On-board on RAM|
|ECC||NA||On-die ECC (ODECC)|
Currently, only Intel 600 series motherboards include the support for DDR5 RAM. This includes the Z690, B660, and H610 chipsets. It should be noted that these chipsets also support DDR4 RAM but one at a time e.g. a Z690 motherboard cannot support both DDR5 and DDR4 RAM on it. If you are looking to buy DDR5 RAM for your PC and are confused about which DDR5 RAM to choose so that you don’t face compatibility issues and the RAM also fulfills your requirements then here I am going to list the best DDR5 RAM based on different parameters.
Note: High-speed overclocked DDR5 RAM do run at voltages higher than 1.1V. You may have to Update Motherboard’s BIOS if a particular DDR5 RAM module is not supported or the system won’t boot at a higher RAM speed or the system is not stable
Best Low Profile DDR5 RAM
[35mm Height, Very good Performance]
If you are looking for a good low-profile DDR5 RAM then Corsair Vengeance DDR5 RAM is one of the best options available in the market. The DDR5 RAM is only 35mm in height and can easily fit in compact cases and with systems that have less clearance for taller RAM modules because of big Air CPU Coolers with a dual-tower design. For cooling, the RAM comes with an aluminum heatspreader that helps to keep the RAM temperatures in check during overclocking or high loads. The RAM supports XMP 3.0 and you can also fine-tune the voltage and other parameters for stable overclocking using the Corsair iCUE software.
Corsair Vengeance DDR5 memory comes in 16GB and 32GB module capacities with speeds ranging from 4800 MHz to 6200 MHz. The RAM is optimized for Intel systems and is very stable at the officially rated speeds. The memory is available in two color options that include black and white.
