X670E, X670, B650E, and B650 are the new motherboard chipsets from AMD for its Ryzen 7000 series Processors or CPUs based on the new LGA AM5 Socket. The Ryzen 7000 series Processors include Ryzen 9 7950X, Ryzen 9 7900X, Ryzen 7 7700X, Ryzen 5 7600X, etc. These processors are built on the smaller 5nm fabrication process and use the new Zen 4 architecture. The Ryzen 7000 series CPUs also sport a new Socket which is AM5 and it is a Land Grid Array (LGA) Socket, unlike the Pin Grid Array (PGA) Socket that was used in the previous AM4 and older AMD Processors. Ryzen 7000 series Processors do not support AMD’s 500 series or older AMD chipset and only support the new 600 series chipsets from AMD.
The AMD’s 600 series chipsets support the latest technologies and features that include PCIe Gen 5.0 support, CPU Overclocking, DDR5 memory support, Integrated Wi-Fi 6E, and AMD EXPO (Extended Profiles for Overclocking) Technology. AMD EXPO includes Memory Overclocking Profiles for one-click automatic Memory Overclocking just like Intel XMP. The letter E (Extreme) after the chipset number denotes that it is the topmost chipset in its respective series and supports more features, PCIe lanes, and ports. So, if you are thinking of getting an AMD 7000 Series Processor but having trouble deciding which AMD 600 series chipset motherboard to go for then you don’t have to worry because here, I am going to compare these AMD 600 series chipsets based on their specifications, features and processor support.
X670E Chipset
X670E chipset is AMD’s flagship chipset for Ryzen 7000 series Processors. It is a dual chiplet chipset which means the Chipset consists of two smaller chips (PROM21 or Promontory 21) that are connected via four PCIe 4.0 lanes. The Chipset natively supports 12x PCIe 4.0 lanes and 8x PCIe 3.0 lanes. The PCIe 4.0 lanes can be configured as LAN, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, NVMe, CEM Slots, etc. while PCIe 3.0 lanes handle low bandwidth onboard devices that include SATA Ports. When it comes to supporting CPU PCIe Lanes the X670E Chipset can support 1×16 or 2×8 PCIe 5.0 lanes for Graphics Card or PEG, 1×4 PCIe 5.0 lanes for NVMe, and 4x GPP PCIe lanes. The X670E Chipset also supports up to two 20Gbps and twelve 10Gbps USB ports. It is the chipset designed for extreme overclocking for AMD’s flagship Ryzen 7000 series processors that include Ryzen 9 7950X and Ryzen 9 7900X.
X670 Chipset
X670 chipset is a slightly downgraded version of the X670E chipset. Unlike X670E, X670 has a single chipset design but comes with the same number of PCIe lanes i.e. 12x PCIe 4.0 lanes and 8x PCIe 3.0 lanes. However, the X670 chipset supports PCIe 5.0 for NVMe drives only and not for the Graphics Card or PEG. From the CPU, the X670 chipset supports 1×16 or 2×8 PCIe 4.0 lanes for the graphics card, 1×4 PCIe 5.0 lanes for NVMe, and 4x GPP PCIe lanes. Other features and technology support are the same as the X670E Chipset which supports up to two 20Gbps and twelve 10Gbps USB ports, 8 SATA Ports, AMD EXPO technology support, and support for extreme overclocking. If you are an enthusiast and do not want to spend extra money on an X670E Chipset motherboard then the X670 chipset will offer you almost the same performance as an X670E chipset and that too without compromising on features.
B650E Chipset
B650E Chipset is a mid-range or higher mainstream chipset for the AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs. It supports all the features of the X670E chipset but supports a lesser number of PCIe lanes and ports. B650E Chipset natively comes with 8x PCIe 4.0 and 4x PCIe 3.0 lanes and supports 1×16 or 2×8 PCIe 5.0 lanes for graphics cards and 1×4 PCIe 5.0 lanes for NVMe and 4x GPP PCIe lanes. The Chipset offers one 20Gbps and six 10Gbps USB ports. It is a single chip chipset and is a great option for anyone building a powerful Gaming PC or Work PC on a budget.
B650 Chipset
B650 Chipset is a slimmed-down version of the B650E Chipset and does not support PCIe 5.0. Besides the lack of PCIe 5.0 support, B650 is almost identical to the B650E chipset and comes with the same number of PCIe lanes, ports, and features. It comes with 8x PCIe 4.0 and 4x PCIe 3.0 lanes and supports 1×16 or 2×8 PCIe 4.0 lanes for graphics card and 1×4 PCIe 4.0 lanes for NVMe. It also offers support for one 20Gbps and six 10Gbps USB ports. B650 chipset is a great option for users who are on a strict budget but want to build good gaming or work PC using mid-range to mainstream Ryzen 7000 series processors.

What AM5 Chipset Motherboard Should You Buy?
Well, if you are an enthusiast and do not have any budget issues then you should go with the X670E chipset for your Ryzen 9 7950X or Ryzen 9 7900X processor. However, if you do not want to spend extra, you can opt for the X670 chipset, which is as good as the X670E chipset. The B650E chipset is meant for users who do not have the budget for X670E or X670 chipsets but do not want to lose out on performance and features. The B650E chipset is more than enough for most users or gamers because it offers everything a flagship chipset provides. For mainstream users or gamers on a relatively tighter budget, the B650 chipset is a very good option and will satisfy the needs of the majority of users whether for building a Gaming or Work PC.
