GTX 1070 vs GTX 1070 Ti vs GTX 1080 GPU Comparison

GeForce GTX 1070 Ti is the newest member in GeForce 10 series graphics cards and it sits between the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080. GTX 1070, GTX 1070 Ti, and GTX 1080 are all high-end graphics cards that can run all the latest AAA games comfortably at high resolutions. The inclusion of the newer GTX 1070 Ti has put some doubts in the minds of gamers that whether to go for GTX 1070, GTX 1070 Ti or GTX 1080 for their gaming needs. So here in this post, I am going to compare all these three graphics cards, so that you can get a complete idea about them and can make a wise decision when you have to select from any one of them.

The main competitor of GTX 1070 and GTX 1070 Ti is Radeon RX Vega 56 and the competitor of GTX 1080 is RX Vega 64 from AMD. You can find their comparisons from the link given below.

GTX 1070 vs GTX 1070 Ti vs GTX 1080 Comparison

Here is the comparison of GTX 1070, GTX 1070 Ti and GTX 1080 graphics cards based on their specifications, performance, power consumption, features, and pricing.

GPU Architecture

All these graphics cards are based on the Pascal GPU architecture and contain the same GP104 GPU that is built on the 16nm fabrication process. However, the number of CUDA Cores is different in all these graphics cards. This can be done by disabling some of the cores in the GPU.

GeForce GTX 1070 comes with 1920 CUDA Cores, GTX 1070 Ti has 2432 CUDA Cores and the GTX 1080 comes with the highest 2560 CUDA Cores. The number of CUDA Cores in GTX 1070 Ti is significantly higher than the GTX 1070 and is much closer to that of the GTX 1080. This makes the theoretical performance of GTX 1070 Ti much closer to that of GTX 1080.

Memory

GTX 1070 and GTX 1070 Ti comes with 8GB GDDR5 memory having an interface of 256-bit delivering bandwidth of 256 GB/s. On the other hand, GTX 1080 comes with faster 8GB GDDR5X memory having 256-bit interface offering a higher bandwidth of 320 GB/s. However, it will not make any noticeable difference in games unless you are gaming at 4K resolution.

Features

All these graphics cards come with the same amount of features. They all support the latest graphics APIs including DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5 and Vulkan. They are SLI ready and support 2-Way SLI (and SLI HB Bridge) for setting up multiple GPUs. Other major features of these graphics cards include G-Sync (to prevent screen tearing in games), Nvidia Ansel, Nvidia GPU Boost and they all are VR Ready.

Gaming Performance

All these graphics cards pack a lot of power and are capable of running the latest AAA games on very high/ ultra graphics settings at 1440p resolution with 60+ FPS. However, GTX 1070 Ti and GTX 1080 are more powerful than the GTX 1070 and can run games at 4K better compared to the GTX 1070.

GTX 1080 is about 20% faster than the GTX 1070 and GTX 1070 Ti is almost as fast as the GTX 1080. GTX 1070 Ti has got good overclocking potential and when overclocked using GPU overclocking software, it can deliver the same performance as that of GTX 1080. Below you can see the gaming performance GTX 1070, GTX 1070 Ti and GTX 1080 graphics cards.

GTX 1070 vs GTX 1080 Gaming Benchmarks

Very High / Ultra / Max Settings GTX 1070 GTX 1080
Witcher 3 (DX11, 1440p) 65 FPS 82 FPS
Rise of the Tomb Raider (DX12, 1440p) 71 FPS 90 FPS
Deus Ex Mankind Divided (DX12, 1440p) 56 FPS 69 FPS
Doom (Vulkan, 1440p) 113 FPS 140 FPS
Battlefield 1 (DX12, 1440p) 80 FPS 98 FPS
GTA V (DX11, 4K) 48 FPS 58 FPS

GTX 1070 Ti vs GTX 1070 Gaming Benchmarks

gtx-1070-ti-performance

The performance of GTX 1070 Ti is very close to GTX 1080 and when overclocked it can match its performance easily. On the other hand, GTX 1070 is the slowest of all but it is still a solid card for 1440 gaming and can also run some of the games even at 4K at playable frame rates.

Power Consumption

When it comes to power consumption the GTX 1070 consumes less power compared to both GTX 1070 Ti and GTX 1080 graphics cards. GTX 1070 has power consumption of 150W while GTX 1070 Ti and GTX 1080 consume 180W of power. However, all these graphics cards require a good 500W power supply for their working.

Price

The base price or MSRP of the Founders Edition of these graphics cards from the official Nvidia website is as follows:

GTX 1070 -> $399

GTX 1070 Ti -> $449

GTX 1080 -> $549

Here GTX 1070 is the cheapest and GTX 1070 Ti is only 50 dollars more than the GTX 1070 but offers performance almost equal to GTX 1080 which is priced much higher at $549. You can find the other variants or models of these graphics cards from different graphics cards manufacturers and their prices may vary depending on the card model or cooler installed. Final Thoughts

In the end, I would like that you cannot go wrong with these graphics cards. If you want to game on 1080p and 1440p only and have strict budget issues then GTX 1070 is what you should get. But if you can spend a little extra then you can get the GTX 1070 Ti which is a better graphics card and you will get the performance of a GTX 1080. I think that the launch of GTX 1070 Ti has spoiled the place of GTX 1080 because at a relatively lower price you can get GTX 1070 Ti that gives better value for your money. So my pick here would be GTX 1070 Ti. If you have got any queries or doubts then feel free to ask me by leaving a comment below.

My Recommendation: GeForce GTX 1070 Ti
