RTX 2080 SUPER vs RTX 2080 vs RTX 2080 Ti Comparison

RTX 2080 SUPER is the top card in the new SUPER series range of graphics cards in the current GeForce RTX 20 series lineup from Nvidia. The card sits above the RTX 2080 and below the RTX 2080 Ti, which is the current flagship card of Nvidia and also the most powerful graphics card in the world right now. RTX 2080 SUPER is not a completely new card and is based on the RTX 2080 GPU core with some improved specs. The card does not have any competition from the AMD side and the only close competitor of this card is the RTX 2080 only. However, for the comparison’s sake, it can be pitted against the RTX 2080 Ti, but the RTX 2080 Ti is in a completely different league, both in terms of performance and price. So, if you are wondering about how good RTX 2080 SUPER is, then to clear your doubts here I am going to compare it with its cousins, which are RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti.

RTX 2080 SUPER vs RTX 2080 vs RTX 2080 Ti

Below is the comparison between RTX 2080 SUPER, RTX 2080, and RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards based on their specifications, performance, pricing, power consumption, and features.

GPU Architecture

All these cards belong to the RTX 20 series family and are built on the Turing GPU architecture on 12nm process. RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 SUPER use the same TU104 chip and come with 2944 and 3072 CUDA Cores respectively. The RTX 2080 Ti uses the TU102 GPU core and comes with 4352 CUDA Cores that are significantly greater than both the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 SUPER. Also, all these graphics cards do come with RT Cores and Tensor Cores too for Ray Tracing and Deep Learning / Artificial Intelligence tasks.

Memory [VRAM]

When it comes to video memory, then also the RTX 2080 Ti is far ahead of others. It comes with 11 GB GDDR6 memory having 352-bit interface, running at 14 Gbps that offers a bandwidth of whopping 616 GB/s. On the other hand, RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 SUPER come with 8GB GDDR6 memory with a 256-bit interface. However, they differ in memory speed and bandwidth as the memory of RTX 2080 SUPER runs at 15.5 Gbps, compared to 14 Gbps of RTX 2080. This results in a slightly higher memory bandwidth of 496 GB/s in RTX 2080 SUPER, while the bandwidth of RTX 2080 stands at 448 GB/s.

RTX 2080 RTX 2080 SUPER RTX 2080 Ti
Memory Size 8GB GDDR6 8GB GDDR6 11GB GDDR6
Memory Interface 256-bit 256-bit 352-bit
Memory Speed 14 Gbps 15.5 Gbps 14 Gbps
Memory Bandwidth 448 GB/s 496 GB/s 616 GB/s

Features

All these graphics cards come with the same set of features that include support for DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.6, Vulkan, Nvidia Ansel, NVLink (SLI Ready), G-Sync, USB Type-C connector (VirtualLink support) and are VR Ready graphics cards. Also, all of them support Real Time Ray Tracing and Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) in supported games.

Gaming Performance

Here are the benchmarks for these graphics cards in popular games at 4K resolution.

In the above benchmarks, you can clearly see that RTX 2080 Ti is clearly the fastest card and way ahead of the other two. The performance difference between RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 SUPER is very small and the RTX 2080 SUPER is around 6% faster than RTX 2080 on average.

Power Consumption

The least power consuming card here is the RTX 2080 while RTX 2080 SUPER and RTX 2080 Ti consume around the same level of power, which is 250W and 260W respectively. However, the PSU recommendation for all these cards is 650W.

RTX 2080 RTX 2080 SUPER RTX 2080 Ti
Power Consumption 225W 250W 260W
Recommended PSU 650W 650W 650W

Pricing

When it comes to pricing then RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 SUPER are priced the same, which is at $699, while RTX 2080 Ti is way pricier and retails at $999 MSRP. The prices mentioned here are for Founders Edition cards only. You can check the current prices of these cards from different AIB partners or graphics card manufacturers from the links given below.

Final Thoughts

RTX 2080 SUPER is a card that really does not do anything great because the performance improvement over the RTX 2080 is very less, which is about 5% to 6% only on average. In simple terms, RTX 2080 SUPER is a slightly faster RTX 2080 only. However, the good thing is that the price of the RTX 2080 SUPER is kept the same as that of the RTX 2080, which means you will not feel cheated. On the other hand, RTX 2080 Ti is in a completely different league, and RTX 2080 SUPER cannot touch the performance it offers. However, it does come with a much greater price too. The launch of RTX 2080 SUPER may cause the RTX 2080 prices to fall, and if you can find an RTX 2080 that is much cheaper than the RTX 2080 SUPER, then it is better to buy RTX 2080 only, otherwise, it is the RTX 2080 SUPER.
