The reverse connector design in motherboards is a new concept in the PC building arena. A motherboard with a reverse connector layout design has all the connectors (SATA, Power, Molex, USB, RGB, and Fan) shifted to the rear end or back side of the motherboard. The front side of the motherboard only has the CPU socket, RAM slots, M.2 slot, and PCI/PCIe slots. A reverse-connector motherboard is also called a back-connect motherboard, back-connector motherboard, rear-connector motherboard, backside connector motherboard, hidden connector motherboard, or back-insertion motherboard. Below is an image of a reverse-connector motherboard showing the front and back sides.
Reverse connector motherboards offer numerous advantages over traditional or regular motherboards, which have been discussed below.
Advantages of Reverse Connector Motherboards
Below are the major advantages of using a reverse-connector motherboard for building your PC.
Clean and Better Aesthetics – A PC with a reverse connector motherboard looks clean and has better aesthetic value to it because all the cables and connectors get hidden on the backside of the motherboard. The only big cable that you can see on the front is the power cable for the graphics card. As almost all the cables and connectors are located on the back side of the motherboard, you get a much cleaner and enhanced panoramic view of all your internal components, including all the RGB lighting (if you have RGB LED components).
Enhanced Accessibility – Accessing, installing, and removing internal components is so much easier in a PC Case with back-connect motherboards. As you don’t have to deal with cables on the front side of the motherboard, access to the components and installation becomes very simple.
Improved Airflow – Airflow in a build with a back-connector motherboard is comparatively better due to the absence of cables on the front, which eliminates restrictions in the airflow path.
Easier to Clean – It is easier to clean the PC Case and internal components with reverse connector motherboards. This is because there is no obstruction between you and the components, as all cables are located behind the motherboard.
Better Cable Management – The cable management is way easier with reverse connector motherboards. You don’t have to think about routing the cables, as all the connectors are present on the backside of the motherboard.
Disadvantages of Reverse Connector Motherboards
Listed below are some drawbacks or limitations of reverse-connector motherboards.
PC Case Compatibility – Reverse connector motherboards cannot be installed in any PC Case. Back-connect motherboards can only be installed in PC Cases that include support for them or are compatible with back-connect motherboards. Right now, there are only a select PC Cases that support reverse-connector motherboards.
Limited Models and Availability – Currently, there are only a handful of reverse connector motherboard models available, and their availability in stores and on online e-commerce sites is also limited. The reverse connector motherboard design is relatively new, and its adoption is in its early stages. However, with time, more and more manufacturers will think of adopting the back-connector layout design for the major Intel and AMD chipsets.
