Best Budget ATX 3.0 PSU with 12VHPWR Connector in 2024

With the increasing power requirements of the latest high-end graphics cards, choosing the right supply is very crucial if you want the best performance and want to ensure the safety of your graphics card, power supply unit, and other internal components of your PC. Modern-day high-end graphics cards have become faster and also their power consumption has increased quite significantly. In addition to the increased power consumption, the latest high-end graphics cards may consume power beyond their rated power for a very short amount of time. These occasional power spikes can cause a heavy load on the PSU; if the PSU can’t handle these power surges, it can damage the graphics card or the PSU can get burnt or damaged.

The high-end graphics cards in the Nvidia 40 series come with the new power connector, the 12VHPWR 16-pin connector. The connector is rated to handle power to up to 600W and needs three 8-pin PCIe connectors for the 12VHPWR 16-pin adapter cable to work for PSUs without a native 12VHPWR 16-pin connector. To handle these power requirements, ATX 3.0 specifications were released by Intel for PSU manufacturers. The ATX 3.0 specifications introduce some important changes and additions to cater to the demands of new-age graphics cards with higher power requirements and with a 12VHPWR 16-pin connector.

ATX 3.0 Power Supply Specifications Key Additions

12VHPWR connector (for power supplies greater than 450W) – All ATX 3.0 power supplies greater than 450W must include a 12VHWPR 16-pin connector and cable for modern-day graphics cards. A single 12VHPWR connector or cable should be able to supply power to up to a maximum of 600W.

2x Total Power Excursion – The ATX 3.0 power supply with a 12VHPWR connector should support peak power of 200% of its total rated power for a very short amount of time (100 microseconds in this case).

3x GPU Power Excursion – The ATX 3.0 PSU can support 3x GPU power excursion which means they can handle power spikes three times the rated power assigned for the GPU.

Note: The 12VHPWR 16-pin connector is also known as the 16-pin PCIe 5.0 connector.

Do you need an ATX 3.0 PSU?

Well, it is not compulsory when you have an older graphics card or a graphics card that is not too power-hungry. However, if you are thinking of buying a high-end graphics card with higher power requirements and having a new 12VHPWR 16-pin connector then getting an ATX 3.0 power supply will benefit you and will have peace of mind because you are not worried about the abnormal power spikes or surges that can occur with modern graphics cards that can result into damage to the card or power supply.

Most of the PSUs available in the market are of ATX 2.1, ATX 2.52, or ATX 2.53 specifications and the ones that support ATX 3.0 specifications are on the expensive side. However, there are some high-quality ATX 3.0 PSUs available that are quite affordable. Below are such ATX 3.0 Power Supply Units that offer great value for the money.

Note: All the below-mentioned ATX 3.0 PSUs are of 850W capacity and are Fully Modular. When it comes to higher wattage power supply, 850 watts is seen as a sweet spot between price and wattage. Also, the most powerful and power-hungry graphics card right now which is the GeForce RTX 4090 requires a minimum of 850W or higher wattage power supply. Having said that, if you require even higher wattage PSU then higher wattage models (1000W or more) are also available for the below-mentioned power supplies.
