When it comes to keyboards then mechanical keyboards offer numerous benefits that include less finger fatigue, better typing & gaming experience, longer life and they feel much more premium than a rubber dome or membrane mechanical keyboard. Despite all these advantages, mechanical keyboards do have a few disadvantages that include their relatively high price and high cost of repair. The switches used in mechanical keyboards are very reliable and durable especially if they are from reputable manufacturers like Cherry, Kailh, Logitech, etc. However, in some cases, the mechanical switches can become faulty or may develop key chatter where multiple keystrokes are being registered in a single keypress. This behavior can be very frustrating, annoying and can lead to reduced productivity and fatigue.
The key chatter issue can be fixed using key chatter software to quite an extent. However, if the mechanical switch has gone very bad or is not responding at all then the only option is to replace that faulty switch. For replacing the faulty switch with a new one, you have to open and disassemble the mechanical keyboard and then have to desolder the faulty switch and then solder the new one. This can be quite a task for an average person because not everyone has the knowledge and expertise in repairing and soldering electronic components. So, if you want to remain on the safer side of the spectrum and want to avoid any future issues with switch replacement then you can opt for the hot-swappable mechanical keyboards.
Hot-swappable Mechanical Keyboards Switch Compatibility
Mechanical Switch compatibility is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a hot-swappable mechanical keyboard. It is because mechanical switches from different manufacturers are not always cross-compatible with each other because of the difference in the keyboard socket design and switch pin design. The Cherry MX switches and their clones are available with either a 3-pin or 5-pin design. Both these switches have got two metal pins and a center plastic leg or pin in common. The only difference is that the 5-pin switch comes with two extra plastic legs (or pins) that give them extra stability on the keyboard mounting plate. You can use a compatible 3-pin switch on a keyboard that uses a 5-pin switch but the inverse is not possible unless you cut the two extra plastic legs of a 5-pin switch cleanly. Below you can see that in 3-pin and 5-pin switches, the two metal pins and the central plastic leg are common but in the 5-pin switch, there are two extra plastic legs at the opposite sides.
When it comes to different manufacturers then you can swap Cherry MX switches with MX Style Gateron, Kailh switches, or vice versa. However, you cannot swap Outemu switches with Cherry MX Style switches because there is a difference in the construction of pins and their size.
Why buy hot-swappable mechanical keyboards?
As I have said earlier also in the article, the main advantage of having a hot-swappable mechanical keyboard is that whenever any switch gets faulty, you can easily replace it with a new one just by pulling the old switch out from the keyboard switch socket and then pushing down the new one into the socket. Moreover, a hot-swappable mechanical keyboard also gives you flexibility over the switches i.e. if you have got bored with the current switches or wish to try out other switches then you can replace the entire switches on the keyboard with different ones. For example, if you have a hot-swappable mechanical keyboard with blue switches and you wish to try out red switches then you can do that very easily without having to change the entire keyboard. It is also way more cost-effective than getting a new mechanical keyboard compared to swapping switches with other ones. You can also mix multiple switch types on a hot-swappable mechanical keyboard i.e. you can place red, blue, brown, or any other color switches on one keyboard only based on your requirements e.g. you use red switches for arrow keys, brown switches for WASD keys, blue switches for Numpad keys and so on.
