GeForce RTX 3070 is the third most powerful graphics card in the RTX 30 series cards. It is positioned below the RTX 3080 and the mighty RTX 3090, which is the flagship card in the RTX 30 series, and probably the most powerful graphics card in the world right now. The GeForce RTX 30 series cards are powered by the new Ampere GPU architecture that offers a lot of improvement over Turing architecture in most departments. The cards are built on the 8nm manufacturing process from Samsung, which significantly improves power efficiency or performance per watt.

RTX 3070 competes against the RTX 2080 Ti, which is the flagship graphics card in the RTX 20 series. RTX 3070 replaces the RTX 2070 SUPER from the previous generation using Turing GPU architecture. The Founders Edition RTX 3070 is a dual-slot card and is much smaller than the RTX 2080 Ti. RTX 3070 is mainly targeted towards 1440p gaming and but is quite capable of 4K gaming too. GPU Architecture

RTX 2070 SUPER and RTX 2080 are built on the Turing GPU architecture on the 12nm fabrication process. All these graphics cards come with GDDR6 memory, where RTX 2070 SUPER and RTX 3070 have the same memory specs and configuration, which is 8GB capacity, 256-bit interface, and 448 GB/s memory bandwidth. RTX 2080 Ti is the clear winner when it comes to the video memory as it comes with 11GB GDDR6 memory having a wider 352-bit interface that generates higher bandwidth of 616 GB/s.

Features

All three of these cards support DirectX 12 Ultimate, OpenGL 4.6, Vulkan, G-Sync, and Nvidia Ansel. Also, all of them support Real-Time Ray Tracing and Deep Learning Super Sampling, which is a image enhancement technology to improve the frame rate in games without sacrificing image quality. RTX 2070 SUPER and RTX 2080 Ti supports DLSS 1.0 while RTX 3070 comes with DLSS 2.0, which offers a bit more performance and image enhancements. RTX 2070 SUPER and RTX 2080 Ti supports SLI using the NVIDIA RTX NVLink Bridge, but there is no multi-GPU or SLI support in the RTX 3070.

The new features present in the RTX 3070 include PCIe 4.0 support and HDMI 2.1 that supports 8K30, 4K144, Dynamic HDR, and resolutions up to 10K. You will also get 5th generation Nvidia Decoder and AV1 codec support, which is a royalty-free and highly efficient codec that can reduce the bandwidth by high stream resolution video by up to 50% compared to H.264. The other new features introduced with the RTX 30 series card include RTX IO that reduces game loading time significantly by decompressing game files/data textures in the GPU memory. Another feature is Nvidia Reflex that helps in lowering game latency.

From the above benchmarks, you can see that RTX 3070 is slightly faster than RTX 2080 Ti in most games, especially at 1440p resolution. At 4K resolution, RTX 2080 Ti does take some lead because of its extra and faster memory. When compared to RTX 2070 SUPER, RTX 3070 is around 30% to 40% faster, which means RTX 3070 decimate the card it replaces.

Power Consumption

The card that offers the best performance per watt is the RTX 3070. It is a very power-efficient card with a maximum power consumption of 220W and requires a 650W PSU. RTX 2080 Ti has a higher consumption of all the three cards, and the recommended PSU requirements for all the three cards is of 650W.

RTX 3070 retails at $499 MSRP, and the price of the RTX 2070 SUPER at the time of launch was also $499. Final Thoughts

There is absolutely no doubt that RTX 3070 is the best card here and is one of the top cards when it comes to price to performance ratio. The card is slightly faster than RTX 2080 Ti in most games and costs less than half of RTX 2080 Ti. RTX 3070 also consumes less power than RTX 2080 Ti while given almost the same or slightly better performance. RTX 2070 SUPER stands no chance against the RTX 3070 as it is around 30% to 40% slower than it. RTX 3070 offers a great 1440p performance and is also a perfect card for 4K gaming for most AAA titles. So, in the end, I would like to conclude that RTX 3070 is an excellent card for the buck and is a must-buy for anyone considering serious gaming on a relatively low budget.
